I Do Not Love You Except Because I Love You Poem by Pablo Neruda

I Do Not Love You Except Because I Love You

Rating: 3.9

I do not love you except because I love you;
I go from loving to not loving you,
From waiting to not waiting for you
My heart moves from cold to fire.

I love you only because it's you the one I love;
I hate you deeply, and hating you
Bend to you, and the measure of my changing love for you
Is that I do not see you but love you blindly.

Maybe January light will consume
My heart with its cruel
Ray, stealing my key to true calm.

In this part of the story I am the one who
Dies, the only one, and I will die of love because I love you,
Because I love you, Love, in fire and blood.

This is a perfect poem that illustrates the confusion and pain that goes along with falling in love with a sociopath or psychopath. The love is an illusion and the reality is that an illusion cannot be sustained. Even if you eventually see and love them unblinded, they will never love you the same. Sad, but true.....I have lived this poem.

Relationships end with the door left open, leaving an unresolved tension preventing the lover from moving on, tempting them to hate the beloved. To the one who loves, seek the Truth. To the one who is beloved and cannot return the love, set them free with the truth.

I love this poem, because it expresses love in such a beautiful way that sometimes we don't have words to say it to the person we love. This poem includes an interesting metaphor and personification.
