Number, The Wonder! Poem by Bharati Nayak

Number, The Wonder!

Rating: 4.9

Who discovered number ?
One, two, three or four?
What does a number stand for?
Number is all that has played
A crucial role in evolving science
From simple counting to measuring
Distances between stars
We use the numbers.

What a wonder the number is
How do mathematicians play with number?
How did come the concept of a negative number?

Numbers are milestones in a person's life
The birthdate, date of graduation, Date of marriage
All things are recorded through number.

Numbers are used in our everyday life
Be it to dial on a phone
Or to purchase things from a grocery
Or to check bank balance
Or to measure temperature of a day
Our daily activities can't go without numbers

Though mathematics look puzzling
It is the most essential thing in our daily living.

Oh! I just realized: Those 'indigenous' aka 'Being a member of the original inhabitants of a particular place' were just 'pulling the leg(s) ' of the anthropologist! ! The Indians could count to infinity! !

When 'anthropologists worked with the indigenous Amazonian people known as the Pirahã, they realized the members of the tribe had no word used consistently to identify any quantity, not even one. '

Fantastic verse. Perhaps we discovered or invented numbers because we are so obsessed with ranking and ordering. Magnificent poem!

The number game is sometime very tricky. People compete to be no 1. Why not let the numbers be left alone to do its own work.

I don't think I've ever been 'indigenous'. Have YOU! ? Ok! I was not planning on giving you stars, BUT 1 - I like the title 2 - It IS in stanzas AND 3 - YOU SAID YOU'D SEND MY ICE CREAM 4 - you ARE my friend. so 4 stars.
